Course Objectives The main aim of this course is to provide an overview of the field of forensic psychology and its applications in the legal and criminal justice systems. Crime and criminal behavior, knowledge and practice of forensic psychology, roles and functions of forensic psychologists in the justice system will be discussed. Special emphasis will be placed on the applied aspects of the field.
Learning Outcomes The students who succeeded in this course;
  • Will be able to describe the field of forensic psychology and the specific application areas of psychology in the legal system.
  • Will be able to transfer the theories that can explain crime, criminal behavior including social / developmental reasons and delinquency in children.
  • Will be able to establish the relationship between criminal behavior and mental illnesses and psychopathology.
  • Will be able to learn about criminal profiling and will be able to do it partially.
  • Will be able to define how to take statements of children and how to interview with children involved in crime.
  • Will be able to define what risky behaviors are and analyze these behaviors.
Course Description This course is designed to provide an understanding of the relationship between psychology and law by showing how research and theory in the field of psychology inform the legal process. Titles include; crime and guilt, violence, social risk factors, crime victims, corrective mechanisms, functioning of courts, taking testimony from child witnesses and ethics. Students will be introduced to the application of relevant theory and research to real life events and practice, and they will be enabled to practice.
